Super Nintendo
The next system in the evolution of Nintendo gaming consoles was the Super Nintendo. The SNES was first released to the public in 1990. As with the NES, Super Nintendo was far above its competition in terms of sounds and graphics. This 16-bit system was twice as fast as its predecessor and even though it faced stiff competition from the Sega Genesis system, it soon became the best-selling system of its time. It also helped to stay on top technologically by giving the customer chips in certain games to keep the system updated. Super Nintendo still used cartridges but when it was released, very few games were available, including Super Mario World. The library of games grew and even as its competition was moving to 32-bit consoles (even the Nintendo 64 was released in 1996), Super Nintendo still remained popular and production of them ceased in 1999. Some of the more popular games are still found with Game Boy Advanced titles.
